Hartlepool Golf Club is an 18-hole course featuring multiple tee options across different skill levels. Designed by the renowned James Braid, the course showcases his distinctive style with several signature holes. Notable Braid-designed holes include the 9th, a narrow par 4 with greenside bunkers, and the 10th, described as a gem that runs seaward with a blind second shot over a mound to a large green below.
The course is set in dramatic sandhills terrain with commanding views of a natural crescent coastline. The 8th hole sits particularly high in the sandhills, offering panoramic vistas across the entire course and shoreline. The layout incorporates numerous challenging features including deep ravines, particularly evident at the 7th hole, which requires a carry over a deep ravine to a green built on a cliff side.
Difficulty varies considerably throughout the round. The course features several par 3s of varying challenge, with the 11th presented as the most intimidating, requiring a 140-160 yard uphill carry. The 14th hole, with a stroke index of 2, is ranked as one of the most challenging, demanding a long straight tee shot with out-of-bounds along the shoreline and deep rough presenting hazards throughout.
The course demonstrates sophisticated design with strategic bunkering, elevation changes, and natural rough throughout. Water hazards appear on select holes, and the overall layout demands accuracy and course management from players of all levels.
