Green Knoll Golf Course opened in 1960 as the first Somerset County Park Commission course, designed by William F. Gordon, who also designed several other notable New Jersey courses including Rockleigh, Princeton, and Oak Hill.
The course features a rolling layout with moderate elevation changes and plays at 6,443 yards with a par of 71 (36-35) from the longest of four tee sets. The design offers an interesting mix of holes, with the stretch from holes three through nine considered the course's best section. Water hazards play significant roles on holes five, six, eight, and 15.
The par-four eighth hole stands out as a notable test, featuring two creeks that create strategic challenges. The first creek winds across the fairway in a way that affects both right-side shots and straight drives, typically forcing golfers to club down off the tee. The second creek runs approximately 20 yards short of the green.
Located at 587 Garretson Road in Bridgewater Township, less than five minutes from Route 22, the course includes a 9-hole pitch and putt course (par 27), a golf shop, vending machines, and a practice green adjacent to the clubhouse.
