Golf del Sur is an 18-hole, par 72 championship course located in San Miguel de Abona, Tenerife, adjacent to the San Blas Natural Reserve. Originally designed by Pepe Gancedo and inaugurated in 1987, it was remodeled in 2005 by Manuel Piñero. The course features a desert-style layout with links characteristics, offering wide fairways, generous greens, and natural hazards. Several holes traverse the impressive San Blas Barranco, providing distinctive ocean views of the Atlantic. The trade winds are a defining characteristic, adding challenge and uniqueness to play.
Designed for all skill levels yet technically demanding for experienced golfers, Golf del Sur has hosted significant tournaments including the European PGA Tour's Open de Tenerife (1989-1994) and the LPGA European Evian Tour's Tenerife Ladies Open (2002, 2007). Notable moments include the 1995 Shell Wonderful World of Golf match between Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson, and Karl Woodward's 1999 long-drive world records of 408 yards. Currently undergoing comprehensive renovation directed by Manuel Piñero, improvements include modern Durabunker bunkers, new Bermuda tees, renovated practice areas, and sustainable irrigation systems.
