Originally founded in 1928 as a 12-hole course, the club expanded to its current 18-hole layout in 1965 following the purchase of the Burns property. The course is set within scenic surroundings offering spectacular views of the Canterbury Plains, Southern Alps, and the sea from various points around the course and clubhouse.

The clubhouse, housed in a historic homestead from the Burns property, has been extended and modified over the years and serves as a popular venue for weddings and functions. Gleniti Golf Club maintains a welcoming, friendly atmosphere and actively conducts competitions throughout the year, despite having designated opening and closing days. The course accommodates both individual players and organized groups seeking to participate in club competitions or arrange private events.
