George Wright Golf Course Top 100 Review

George Wright Golf Course is a Donald Ross-designed public course located in Hyde Park, Massachusetts, opened in 1938. The course was built with Workers Progress Administration funding following the 1929 market crash, representing a significant engineering achievement. Construction required 60,000 pounds of dynamite to excavate ledge, 72,000 cubic yards of dirt to raise ground above swamp level, and 57,000 linear feet of drainage pipe. The 18-hole course is situated on 156 acres and features a Norman-style clubhouse completed at substantial cost.

The course has received notable recognition in recent decades, including Golf Digest's Best Municipal Course in Massachusetts and Golfweek's 14th Best Municipal Golf Course in the U.S. in 2009. It was also selected as a Metropolitan Golf Association Amateur Qualifying Site in 2009. Named after Hall of Fame baseball player George Wright, who championed golf development in Boston, the course reflects both historical significance and quality design. The City of Boston assumed operational control in 2004, focusing on providing quality golf at affordable rates to residents.
