Located in Oarai, Ibaraki Prefecture, Oarai Golf Club is a 7,205-yard, par-72 championship course designed by the renowned architect Seiichi Inoue. Opened in 1953, the course is situated on a rare seaside dune terrain in Japan, characterized by a dense forest of black pines that Inoue integrated into the strategic design. The layout utilizes the natural topography, wind patterns, and mature pine trees as primary hazards, creating a challenging environment that requires precise shot-making and course management. The front nine presents a mix of demanding long holes and technical challenges. The fifth hole, a 414-yard par 4, is guarded by a pine forest known as "Naka-jima" that forces players to navigate carefully to avoid a stymie. The sixth hole features a significant elevation change, with a hill separating the tee from the green, while the ninth hole requires a precise second shot over a pine tree to reach the putting surface. The back nine continues this theme of strategic complexity, highlighted by the eleventh hole where a long pond on the left demands a safe drive to the right side. The course is anchored by two formidable par-5s that define the championship test. The seventh hole, the longest on the course at 542 yards, features a second shot that must clear a dense pine forest, requiring both significant distance and height. The fifteenth hole, measuring 533 yards, presents a similar challenge with a solitary pine tree standing in the center of the fairway, forcing players to choose their line carefully to avoid the surrounding rough and water hazards. Oarai Golf Club has established itself as a significant venue in Japanese golf, hosting the JLPGA Tour event, the Oarai Kankyo Cup. The course is known for its "wabi-sabi" aesthetic, where the natural beauty of the dunes and pines is preserved rather than manicured into a uniform landscape. The difficulty of the course is further emphasized by the local rules, which treat ponds on the fourth, eleventh, and fifteenth holes as penalty areas, and the presence of deep bunkers and thick pine branches that frequently interfere with play.
