Located in Fray Bentos, Uruguay, the Fray Bentos Golf Club is a nine-hole course designed by the renowned architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie. Founded in 1928 by residents of the historic Anglo neighborhood, the club was formally inaugurated in 1937 as the Anglo Sports Pavilion. The layout, which totals 5,806 yards from the back tees, features a par of 71 with a front nine par of 35 and a back nine par of 36. The course was significantly redesigned by Álvaro Canesa in 1984, a renovation that integrated natural features such as a centennial algarrobo tree into the strategic design. The terrain is characterized by small, undulating greens and fairways that are divided by water hazards and protected by strategically placed bunkers. The design utilizes the existing tree line intelligently, creating a challenging environment for players of varying skill levels. The course offers three sets of tees, with yardages ranging from 2,843 yards on the front nine to 2,963 yards on the back nine from the white tees. The longest hole is the par-4 seventh at 510 yards from the blue tees, while the shortest is the par-4 second at 193 yards. A notable feature of the course is the ninth hole, a short par-5 that presents a unique challenge with a central eucalyptus tree located 150 yards from the tee. The green is defended by two bunkers, one of which contains the historic algarrobo tree incorporated during the 1984 redesign. The club maintains a classic atmosphere in its clubhouse, preserving the English heritage established by its founders and reflecting its origins within the industrial landscape linked to Liebig’s and the Anglo frigorífico.
