Founded in 1915, Escanaba Country Club is the oldest golf course in Delta County, Michigan. Originally designed as a nine-hole course, it was expanded to 18 holes in 1991. The front nine features a classical, tree-lined layout, while the back nine is more open with water hazards coming into play on six holes.
The course presents distinct challenges across both nines. Notable features include Lake Pauline on hole 7, the narrowest green on the course, and multiple deep greens requiring careful club selection. Water hazards on the back nine add complexity to several holes, particularly hole 12, which requires a 220-yard carry over water from the center tee box.
The signature hole is the 18th, widely considered one of the most difficult finishing holes in the Upper Peninsula. This 428-yard par four features an uphill approach shot to a green situated 40 feet above the fairway, with a severely sloped putting surface that presents significant challenge even after reaching the green. Strong winds, particularly from the south, significantly impact play throughout the course, adding to its difficulty. The course maintains a good balance of playable holes and demanding tests, making it suitable for various skill levels.
