The Downback golf course is a nine-hole layout located on the campus of Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Situated at 5400 Ramsey Street, the course is designed to challenge golfers through a variety of terrain features, including ravines, side hills, and elevated greens. The layout is characterized by strategic decision-making, with several holes offering risk-reward options where players must choose between aggressive tee shots and safer, conservative approaches. The course features distinct holes with specific strategic demands. Hole #1, named "Down," presents a small green that requires a precise angle from the left side of the tee. Hole #2, "Railroad," is a par 4 where players can attempt to reach the green off the tee or lay up for an easier wedge shot, with the left side of the fairway offering a safer landing area than the hill on the right. Hole #3, "Pipeline," allows for a shorter club off the tee for a wedge approach or a more aggressive drive to access a wider fairway leading to a diagonal green. Hole #4, also named "Pipeline," is described as having more risk than reward, requiring a shot onto a second fairway that leaves a wedge shot from a side hill or downhill lie over a ravine. Hole #5, "Long," features the largest green on the course, which is canted from left to right, rewarding a well-struck tee shot with a long iron approach. Hole #6, "Deception," is the longest par 3 and features a blind tee shot onto a redan-style green. Hole #7, "Angles," demands a careful approach to a back-to-front sloped green, with the closer proximity to the bunker off the tee providing a better angle. Hole #8, "Subtle," requires accurate wind gaging and club selection due to a front-to-back sloped green protected by a bunker behind. The back nine continues the strategic theme with Hole #9, "Triplets," which is guarded by three trees on the left and features one of the smallest greens on the course. Hole #10, "Narrows," is an uphill second shot that requires picking enough club due to a false front on the green. Hole #11, "Thimble," is a hole where a solidly struck long iron places the ball on or around the green. Hole #12, "Carry," requires a tee shot over a large ravine to a meandering fairway leading to an interesting green. Hole #13, "Cape," is a template hole that requires a committed tee shot, with the right side offering an easier approach to an elevated green. Hole #14, "Short," allows for a short iron approach that enables players to attack any hole location. Hole #15, "Road," features a road splitting the fairway, giving golfers a choice between cutting the corner for a short iron or playing safely to the left for a longer distance; the green has been renovated to allow for more hole locations. Hole #16, "Tears," is described as the most difficult green on the course, requiring a proper play from the left side for the best angle. The final two holes provide a unique conclusion to the round. Hole #17, "Boomerang," includes a landing area and references Alister MacKenzie’s philosophy on providing alternative routes for weaker players. Hole #18, "Back," ends the day with a two-tiered green featuring a diagonal ridge, where a tee shot on the putting surface is rewarded. The course is part of the PGA Golf Management program at Methodist University.
