Deal Golf & Country Club is a private, member-owned course founded in 1898 on 130 acres in Deal, New Jersey. The original nine holes were designed by Lawrence Van Etten, with subsequent expansions and modifications overseen by renowned architect Donald Ross, who redesigned several holes in 1912. The course features characteristic tight fairways, strategic bunkering, and highly contoured greens typical of Donald Ross design.
The layout expanded from the original nine holes to eighteen holes by 1900, measuring 6,495 yards—considered the second longest in the country at that time. In 2000, golf architect Kelly Blake Moran restored worn bunkers and tees while maintaining the course's original character. The course has hosted significant competitions including the New Jersey State Amateur and the Metropolitan Amateur and Open.
The club's rich competitive history includes visits from five-time British Open Champion J.H. Taylor and 1910 U.S. Open Champion Alex Smith. Notable professional Vic Ghezzi served as golf professional from 1935-1941 and won the 1941 PGA Championship. The course remains challenging and is maintained to high standards, preserving its century-old legacy while serving its membership.
