Big Met Golf Course, originally named Course #1, is believed to be Ohio's most played golf course and has hosted over 6,000,000 rounds since opening in 1926. Located in the Rocky River Valley in Fairview Park, the course was originally designed by Stanley Thompson and features gentle rolling hills with moderate length and nine sand bunkers.
The course is characterized by a prominent dike that holds back the Rocky River, visible from several vantage points throughout play. Big Met combines scenic beauty with playability, offering an ideal blend suitable for golfers of all skill levels while remaining challenging for advanced players. The course underwent significant renovations, including fairway irrigation installation in 1964, hole lengthening in 1967, and a comprehensive 1998 renovation featuring computerized irrigation and flood control systems.
In 2005, the original clubhouse was replaced with a LEED-certified structure to accommodate increased parking. The course offers neatly trimmed rough and well-maintained conditions. Amenities include power and hand cart rentals, putting greens, golf lessons, and an on-site grille. Big Met is celebrating its centennial in 2026 and continues to serve as a popular public golf destination in the Cleveland area.
