Bally Haly Golf Club is located at 100 Golf Course Road in St. John’s, Newfoundland, having relocated to its current site in May 2023. The facility features two distinct layouts: the South Championship Course and the North Executive Course. The South Course is an 18-hole, par-72 layout that offers a range of tee lengths from 5,082 to 6,581 yards. It is described as having tour-quality greens and deceptive drives, designed to challenge players of all skill levels. The North Course is a par-61 executive layout with tee lengths ranging from 2,934 to 3,716 yards, providing a strategic test for beginners and experienced players alike. The club holds the distinction of being Newfoundland and Labrador’s oldest golf club. Its origins trace back to 1896 when Scottish designer Neil Shannon laid out a nine-hole course at Buckmaster’s Field. As the game gained popularity, the club purchased the Bally Haly estate in 1908 for $7,500, expanding to an 18-hole course also designed by Shannon. The estate was originally owned by William Haly, a 19th-century British Army officer who named the property after his father’s estate in Ireland. The original clubhouse was built in 1910 after the initial residence burned down, and it was rebuilt following fires in 1936 and 1957. The current course is set amidst panoramic views and lush greenery, offering a diverse and dynamic layout. The facility includes a driving range, golf shop, and Trackman simulators for year-round practice. The club also features a restaurant and bar, and hosts various events including weddings, tournaments, and corporate gatherings. The South Championship Course provides a rewarding experience for golfers seeking a full round, while the North Executive Course offers a shorter, equally enjoyable round ideal for those looking to hone their skills or play a quicker game.
