Astoria Golf & Country Club, founded in June 1923, is located on the Northern Oregon Coast near Warrenton, less than a mile from Sunset Beach and ten miles south of the Columbia River mouth. The course occupies land featuring prominent sand dunes running parallel to the coastline. The layout combines links and parkland-style golf, with holes strategically routed between and around the dunes following natural terrain shaped by sand, wind, and sea. Four holes play through the bottoms of the two largest dunes, while others traverse the rolling Clatsop Plains terrain, with two holes requiring water carries from the back tees. The course was designed by George Junor, the club's first superintendent, in collaboration with Club President Charles Halderman, who rejected an earlier east-west routing in favor of the current north-south design. The third hole is a signature par-4 dune hole that has gained recognition among golf architects for its exceptional design. Though ocean views aren't visible, the marine environment is evident through sound and atmospheric conditions. Course conditions remain excellent year-round, though playing conditions vary due to North Coast weather patterns. The course has hosted numerous PGA Tour professionals and is regarded as one of the Pacific Northwest's most distinctive and respected golf destinations.
