Alwoodley Golf Club is regarded as one of Britain's finest inland courses, located on Wigton Moor north of Leeds. Designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie in 1907, it was his first course design and is known as "The Original MacKenzie." The course has been lengthened to over 6,900 yards from the championship tees and features the classic MacKenzie layout that remains largely unchanged.
Set on natural heathland, the course is characterized by tight, springy, fast-running fairways cut through heather and gorse, with occasional rocky outcrops. The terrain offers firm playing conditions typical of moorland courses. The design demonstrates MacKenzie's trademark subtlety and sophistication, with fairways that require precision play.
The course ranks among Great Britain and Ireland's top 100 courses and holds significant historical importance as MacKenzie's inaugural design before he went on to create world-renowned layouts including Augusta National, Cypress Point, and Royal Melbourne. MacKenzie was a founder member and served as the club's first secretary before becoming captain in 1912.
