Ilkley Golf Club, founded in 1890, is the third oldest golf club in Yorkshire. The course has been designed by some of golf's finest architects, including Harry Colt, Alister Mackenzie, and James Braid. Located in Ilkley, the club features a moorland setting that is noted for its outstanding natural beauty and scenic landscape.
The course presents itself as a significant test of golf, combining aesthetic appeal with genuine sporting challenge. It has hosted numerous golfing dignitaries and champions throughout its history, including Harry Vardon, J.H. Taylor, Peter Thomson, and more recently, Masters winner Ian Woosnam, who selected Ilkley for his inaugural Senior Golf Classic in 2020, describing it as "truly a great course."
The club has strong historical connections to professional golf, having nurtured Colin Montgomerie during his junior years under the guidance of club professional Bill Ferguson. Among its membership are two former Ryder Cup Captains and a former Walker Cup Captain. The course's moorland setting and challenging layout make it a distinctive Yorkshire golfing destination that has attracted international recognition and respect from both amateurs and professionals alike.
