Founded in 1967 by the Groton Golf and Recreation Association, it was developed as an affordable recreational facility for rural residents. The course includes watered tees, greens, and approaches, along with a practice chipping and putting green. Operating on a first-come, first-served basis without advance tee time reservations, Stonehedges welcomes both the general public and members. The facility operates from 7am to 9pm daily and includes a clubhouse with restaurant and bar services. The course has maintained stable membership averaging around 210 members while generating revenue through memberships, greens fees, cart rentals, and on-site dining. After financial challenges in the 1980s, the course was restructured to focus on golf operations, eliminating additional amenities like tennis courts and a swimming pool to ensure financial stability.
