Sand Moor Golf Course

West Yorkshire, England

Sand Moor Golf Club is a distinguished inland heathland course located on the north Leeds sandbelt, adjacent to Eccup reservoir on Leeds' northern outskirts, offering magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. Founded in 1926, the course was significantly influenced by Yorkshire-born Dr. Alister MacKenzie, the renowned designer of Augusta National, who served on the first Green Committee and as Vice President from 1926 to 1930. The course underwent modifications in the late 1960s under the guidance of Henry Cotton and has been recently updated by acclaimed architects Andy Watson and Ken Moodie, who remodelled bunkers and made subtle refinements to maintain alignment with modern standards while preserving the original design philosophy. Sand Moor presents a balanced challenge, asking golfers considered questions without excessive punishment for errors. The par 3 holes are particularly demanding, requiring precision in both accuracy and distance control. The course is maintained to exceptional standards with immaculately cut greens, and the layout showcases the characteristic features of quality heathland golf design.
