Balcomie Links

Crail, Fife, Scotland

Balcomie Links is one of Scotland's finest golfing gems, featuring an 18-hole championship course with a rich history spanning centuries. Much of the layout was designed by the legendary Old Tom Morris, who laid out the first nine holes in 1895 and extended the course to 18 holes in 1900. Golf has been played at Balcomie since 1857. The course is set in the scenic East Neuk of Fife, with spectacular views across the Firth of Forth and the North Sea. It features distinctive links characteristics including natural hollows, stone walls, shared greens, and bunker faces clad in railway sleepers, creating a unique and challenging layout where no two rounds play identically. The par varies across multiple tee positions, accommodating different skill levels. Notable holes include the par-4 opening hole named after the historic 1884 Boathouse, the dramatic par-3 14th called "The Cave," and the finishing par-3 at "The Quarry." The course presents considerable difficulty with holes like the par-4 5th "Hell's Hole," ranked as the course's most challenging. Water hazards, including burns, strategic bunkering, and undulating terrain throughout demand precision and course management from players of all abilities.
