Birstall Golf Club

Leicestershire, England

Birstall Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course founded in 1901, located on Station Road in Birstall to the north of Leicester. The course measures 6,239 yards and plays to a par of 70, with a course rating of 70.6 and a slope of 129. No single architect is attributed with the original design, and the layout follows a traditional parkland style that has developed organically over its 120-plus year history. The terrain sits on elevated ground and is described as relatively easy to walk despite the modest elevation. The course is tree-lined throughout, with the mature woodland placing a consistent emphasis on driving accuracy. The fairways and greens are consistently well regarded, with the putting surfaces in particular drawing positive comment from visitors. From the higher parts of the course there are views across Leicester city, the hills of Charnwood Forest to the north-west, and eastward towards Rutland. The layout offers a fair test across all handicap levels without being severely penal, and the slope rating of 129 reflects a meaningful but not extreme challenge. One distinctive feature of the club is its proximity to the preserved Great Central Railway, with the heritage steam line running adjacent to the course at the Station Road boundary.
