South Moor Golf Club

County Durham, England

South Moor Golf Club is a county championship course designed by the legendary Dr. Alister MacKenzie, located near Stanley in County Durham. The course winds through a stunning heathland landscape characterized by gorse, heather, and bracken, presenting varied terrain and natural beauty throughout the round. The layout features Augusta National-style greens with large, undulating surfaces that are a signature characteristic of MacKenzie's design philosophy. Each hole presents distinct challenges, requiring golfers to adapt their approach across the course. The heathland setting provides both aesthetic appeal and strategic complexity, with the natural vegetation framing the holes. As a county championship venue, South Moor hosts significant tournaments including the North of England Under 14s Junior Stroke Play Championship and participates in various competitive structures including the NDL Division 2. The course maintains reciprocal golf relationships and welcomes visitors through green fee arrangements and society bookings. The club benefits from its association with MacKenzie's renowned design legacy, which includes world-famous courses such as Augusta National, Cypress Point, and Royal Melbourne. This heritage positions South Moor among England's notable heathland courses, offering a challenging and rewarding experience for golfers of varying abilities.
