Furness Golf Club

Barrow-in-Furness, Westmorland and Furness, England

Furness Golf Club is the 3rd oldest links course and 6th oldest golf club in England, founded in 1872. Located on Walney Island in the Furness peninsula of Cumbria, the course offers stunning views across the Irish Sea towards the Isle of Man, with the Lakeland hills providing a dramatic backdrop. The links layout provides a authentic coastal golf experience set within natural duneland terrain. The course presents a fair but challenging test of golf suitable for all ability levels, with characteristic links conditions and hazards. As a traditional links layout, it features undulating fairways, natural rough, and strategic bunkering typical of the format. The course is particularly notable for its heritage and historical significance within English golf, representing one of the country's earliest established courses. The club maintains high standards for course condition and player etiquette, requesting that visitors replace divots, repair pitch marks, and rake bunkers. Fairway mats are in use to protect playing surfaces. The course remains relatively unknown despite its prestigious pedigree, positioning itself as a well-kept secret offering an authentic links golf experience in the North West of England.
