Whitburn Golf Club is an 18-hole par 70 course stretching 6,013 yards, located east of Cleadon Hills in South Tyneside between South Shields and Sunderland. Designed by Harry Colt and Co, the course opened in 1933 and is built on natural limestone with excellent drainage, enabling year-round play. The course is renowned for its superb greens and well-maintained fairways, offering panoramic views across the North East coastline from County Durham to Northumberland, overlooking dramatic North Sea cliffs. Recent developments completed in winter 2023/24 enhanced the course with 31 new bunkers, lengthened holes, and subtle design modifications. The challenging layout provides distinctive golf in a magnificent setting, with the natural limestone base and fantastic drainage system allowing infrequent closures despite weather conditions. The club maintains a strong commitment to accessibility, offering flexible membership options and varied green fee structures, including twilight late-afternoon rates.
