Yelverton Golf Club

Devon, England

Yelverton Golf Club is a moorland golf course on common land north of Plymouth in Devon, adjacent to Dartmoor National Park and located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty 600 feet above sea level. The course comprises 18 holes with a par of 76 and measures 6,302 yards. In 1920, Herbert Fowler laid out the course which remains largely unchanged today, with Fowler responsible for holes 1-15 and James Braid designing the closing three holes after World War II. The course features outstanding views across Dartmoor and over Cornwall, with Fowler incorporating old mine workings and leats as natural hazards to challenge golfers of all standards. The first 12 holes make good use of the southern part of the site playing in seclusion, while the 13th to 18th holes are compressed on the northern part with no two holes playing in the same direction. Notable features include the downhill par-3 12th hole ringed with bunkers and mounding. The Devonport Leat, built in 1793, is in play as a hazard affecting holes 8, 9, 10, and 17. The course is characterized as natural moorland with Dartmoor ponies and cattle sharing the fairways. The course has hosted many top quality competitions, including the EGU Men's Senior Amateur Championships in 2006 and the Devon Golf Men and Ladies Amateur Championship in 2023. Yelverton is ranked in the 'Top 100 Golf Courses' in England and as the 5th best in Devon and 90th in England by the National Club Golfer (2025-26).
