Ardfin Golf Course

Argyll and Bute, United Kingdom

Ardfin Golf Course is an 18-hole championship course sculpted into the rugged shoreline at the southern tip of the Isle of Jura, Scotland. Designed and built over six years by legendary architect Bob Harrison, the course represents his 14th and final concept for the site, refined through meticulous planning to maximize inspiring holes while respecting the dramatic landscape. The layout features two distinct sections: holes 1-11 traverse the western cliffs with sweeping views across to Islay, descending to beach level, while holes 12-14 continue along the beach before turning inland along a ridge toward Jura House. The par-3 10th is notable as a "once-in-a-lifetime" hole played from bluff to bluff. The course's wild, rugged character is complemented by a minimalist design philosophy—narrow greens with fewer bunkers than typical courses, relying on the naturally challenging clifftop terrain. Built on demanding ground conditions of peat and rock requiring extensive drainage and topsoil work, the course plays firm and fast year-round. Ardfin has received significant acclaim from golf publications and ranking organizations, with recognition as a modern masterpiece and among the world's top courses. The design seamlessly integrates with the landscape, appearing as if established for a century.
