Ashton-in-Makerfield Golf Club is a predominantly parkland course set within the mature former estate of Lord Gerard. Founded in 1902, the club relocated to its current location in 1965 and expanded from nine to 18 holes between 1974 and the present day. The par 70 course measures 6,223 yards from the white tees, 5,918 from the yellow tees, and 5,306 from the ladies tees. The course is characterized by narrow tree-lined fairways and small greens that challenge golfers of all abilities. Lord Gerard's 19th-century legacy includes specimens of trees from every country in the British Empire, creating a landscape often compared to a miniature Wentworth. Precision driving is essential throughout the layout. The opening holes present significant hazards, offering no easy introduction to the course. Following a 2010 pipeline installation by United Utilities, two additional holes (12a and 13a) were created as compensation, bringing the total to 20 holes and allowing flexible 18-hole combinations during course maintenance. The course provides a consistent experience of risk and reward, attracting returning visitors.
