Nunfield Golf Course

Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland

Dumfries and County Golf Club is an 18-hole course established in 1912 on land from the Nunfield Estate in Dumfries, Scotland. Designed by Willie Fernie, winner of the 1883 Open Championship, the course features two distinct loops that both start and finish at the clubhouse, enabling efficient two-tee starts. The layout spans just under 100 acres with a par of 69. In the late 1920s, five-time Open Champion James Braid proposed a significant redesign, replacing agricultural features like hedges and ditches with his signature bunkers. Post-WWII expansion incorporated additional Nunfield Estate land, while the 1960s saw further development from the Dalscone Estate acquisition and an extensive tree-planting program that now characterizes the course. The course is relatively compact and short by modern standards but presents a stern test. It is particularly noted for its abundance of trees, blind tee shots, and exceptional greens. All greens were rebuilt to USGA standards in the 1990s, making them among the finest in the region. The course has produced numerous international players and hosts regular competitions.
