Karakung Golf Course

PA, United States

The Karakung Course is one of two 18-hole layouts at Cobbs Creek Golf Club, the site of the first public golf course in the Greater Philadelphia area. Originally designed by Alan P. Corson and A. H. Smith, the course was built initially as an 11-hole course to help alleviate the large number of golfers playing the Olde Course. The course has a par of 71 and measures 5,762 yards. Both Karakung and the Olde Course are fairly flat tree-lined layouts with mounding that can cause uneven lies, and water hazards come into play on at least eight holes per course. The Karakung Course was originally nine holes, but an additional nine holes were completed back in 1989. The course has a rating of 66.7 and a slope of 115. The layout presents a moderate challenge suitable for golfers of various skill levels, with hazards and water features strategically placed throughout the design. By 1929, over 120,000 rounds of golf alone were played at both the Cobb's Creek "Olde Course" and "Karakung Course", demonstrating the facility's popularity as a public golf destination. Cobb's Creek is enrolled in Audubon International's Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses to ensure that the course helps to protect local environment, conserve natural resources, and provide wildlife habitats.
