Halifax West End Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-69 moorland course measuring approximately 5,971 yards, located at Paddock Lane on the northern outskirts of Halifax, West Yorkshire, at an elevation of around 1,000 feet above sea level. The club was founded in 1906 as a nine-hole layout and extended to 18 holes in 1912 with the involvement of Alister MacKenzie, who went on to design Augusta National and Cypress Point. The course rating is 70.5 with a slope of 132. The layout occupies a compact site that formerly served as a racecourse until the late 1800s. Despite the confined footprint, the routing is well structured, with most holes bordered by trees that provide separation and prevent the course feeling cramped. Virtually every fairway is tree-lined, placing a strong premium on accuracy from the tee. The course features six par threes, each presenting a distinct challenge — four play uphill and two downhill — contributing to the high difficulty rating relative to the yardage. Drainage is excellent, allowing year-round play on natural turf. Notable holes include the stroke index 1 third hole, a 407-yard par four often played into a prevailing wind with a fairway bunker guarding the drive; the dogleg 16th with water hazards front and right of the green; and the 411-yard 18th, regarded as the course's best hole, featuring an uphill drive and a heavily sloping green. The elevated setting provides panoramic views across the surrounding Calder Valley.
