Church Stretton Golf Club

Shropshire, England

Church Stretton Golf Club is a historic upland course established in 1898, located in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Designed in part by legendary architect James Braid, a five-time Open Champion, the course sits over 1,200 feet above sea level, making it one of England's highest golf courses. The course features bracken and heather-lined fairways that wind through hills and valleys, leading to undulating greens set against spectacular panoramic views. The layout demands precision and course management rather than distance, with the natural landscape providing strategic challenge. Notable characteristics include firm fairways maintained by free-roaming sheep and tricky putting surfaces. The sandy soil and excellent year-round drainage ensure the course remains in superb condition throughout all seasons without temporary greens or tees. This combination of natural beauty and strategic design has attracted significant praise from leading golf publications including Today's Golfer and Golf Monthly, which have called it a "unique gem." The course welcomes visitors, societies, and new members, offering a golfing experience that combines challenge with breathtaking scenery and excellent playability year-round.
