Craigmillar Park Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 70 parkland course measuring 5,825 yards, situated on the gentle slopes of Blackford Hill in Edinburgh, beneath the Royal Observatory. The club was constituted in 1895 and settled at its present location in 1907, with James Braid designing the full 18-hole layout which officially opened in 1927. Despite its city location, the course sits within Edinburgh's green belt and enjoys a remarkably tranquil setting, with deer regularly spotted on the fairways. The layout is a hillside parkland course with tree-lined, undulating fairways offering panoramic views over Edinburgh, Arthur's Seat, the coast of East Lothian, across the Firth of Forth to Fife, and the Perthshire Hills beyond. The course is relatively short but demands accuracy and careful course management throughout. The par-3 15th is widely regarded as the standout hole, played from an elevated tee to a two-tiered green with four bunkers and the Braid Burn water hazard crossing in front — a deceptive hole that plays shorter than its yardage due to the elevated tee position. The Craigmillar Park Open, inaugurated in 1961 as the first order of merit event of the Scottish amateur season, carries World Amateur Golf ranking points and has attracted Scotland's leading amateurs for over six decades. Past winners include Nick Faldo, who won in 1976 and turned professional the following day, as well as Marc Warren and Lloyd Saltman.
