La Jolla, CA, United States
The Torrey Pines South Course is the more challenging of two courses at this San Diego coastal facility, originally designed by William Bell, Sr. in 1957. Renovated by Rees Jones in 2001 and again in 2019, the course now extends to 7,800 yards from the back tees and plays significantly more difficult than its predecessor. Located along San Diego's rugged coastline, the South Course features rolling terrain with 54 sand bunkers, primary grasses of Kikuyu overseeded with rye on tees and fairways, and bentgrass greens. The course is distinguished by dramatic clifftop views where hang-gliders and para-gliders soar near the southern holes, adding visual distraction to an already challenging layout.
The South Course has hosted the U.S. Open Championships in 2008 and 2021, and annually hosts the Farmers Insurance Open PGA Tour event. With an average of 92,000 rounds played yearly, the course spans 32 acres of fairway and 68 acres of rough, with one water hazard. The facility maintains tournament-quality conditions with greens cut to 1/8 inch at approximately 9.5 feet on the Stimpmeter.
