There are not many chances to play an open competition at a course rated in Britain and Ireland's Top 100, which makes this event at Hunstanton particularly worth noting. The East Anglian Men's Spring Open Foursomes takes place on 19 April, offering pairs the chance to test their partnership skills on one of England's finest links layouts using Stableford scoring. Hunstanton is the only west-facing golf course on England's east coast, which gives it an entirely different feel to its neighbours - late afternoon light over the sea and views stretching across The Wash make for a very distinctive round. The links terrain here is genuine, with rolling fairways set within striking dunes and links grasses that have shaped the game for 125 years. If you are planning a golfing trip to Scandinavia, Bro Hof Slott near Stockholm is one of Europe's most celebrated golf destinations and it now has an open competition listed. The Greensome Pointbogey format on 25 April adds a paired twist to what is already a challenging lakeside layout. The Stadium Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., plays from five different tee positions with broad fairways, extensive water hazards and wind as a near-constant factor. The contrasting Castle Course - also by Trent Jones - tightens things up with narrower fairways and a blend of parkland and wooded terrain that has earned comparisons to a Scottish inland links. The facility is best known for its elite tournament programme and the combination of world-class design with a resort and hotel on site makes it a destination worth planning a trip around. For those who love a golf trip to the Highlands - and who doesn't - the TWA Bridges Open at Carrbridge on 25 April is the kind of event that reminds you why smaller clubs are so often the most rewarding to visit. Open to all golfers up to handicap 36, the entry fee is just £25 and the format is individual Stableford. Carrbridge is a 9-hole course set in beautiful Highland surroundings near Inverness, with a rustic clubhouse under a distinctive red tin roof that has become something of a local landmark. The course plays year-round, maintaining full greens where conditions allow, and the Highland landscape means no two visits are ever quite the same. Corrstown is a club that tends to surprise first-time visitors, and the Men's Open on 29 April is a good excuse to see why. Located at Kilsallaghan near Dublin Airport, the club runs 27 holes across three distinct loops - the River, Meadow and Orchard courses - meaning there is plenty of variety for return visits. The standout curiosity here is that Corrstown is home to Dublin's only island green, a feature that makes at least one hole on the card genuinely memorable. The individual Stableford format is open to all male golfers and the parkland setting provides an attractive backdrop as the spring season gets properly under way in County Dublin. For anyone flying into Dublin for a golf break, the proximity to the airport makes Corrstown an unusually convenient choice for either a warm-up or a closing-day round.<\/p>\n

One of the more unusual discoveries in this week's batch is the programme of open competitions at Hakone Yunohana Golf Course in Japan. The course sits at 935 metres above sea level - the highest golf facility in the Hakone area - and plays to a par of 71 over 5,493 yards with bentgrass greens throughout. The setting is extraordinary: fairways drop away with panoramic views of Sagami Bay and Enoshima Island, while Mount Hakone Komadake provides a dramatic backdrop. The 13 May competition uses the New Peoria scoring method over the full 18 holes and comes with an awards ceremony after play, with attractive prizes on offer. The famous par-4 17th, known locally as Fukuwa Sagamino Umi, plays as a right-to-left dogleg with sweeping bay views that have made it something of a signature hole. For golfers visiting Japan this spring, this is the kind of venue that rarely makes it onto standard visitor itineraries but absolutely should. Royal Portrush needs no introduction as the home of The Open Championship in 2019, but the lesser-known Valley course on the same site is a genuinely special track in its own right. Ranked in the top 40 in Ireland and set on natural seaside turf through the sheltered landscape of the War Hollow - believed to be the site of an ancient battle around 1102 - the Valley plays very differently to its famous neighbour. Small, cleverly positioned greens demand precision on approach shots, and several holes have been recently redesigned to integrate seamlessly with the overall routing. Graeme McDowell, U.S. Open Champion and Ryder Cup hero, honed his game here as a junior. The Mixed Foursomes Strokeplay on 24 May opens entries from 2 May and represents one of the most compelling open competition opportunities in the British Isles this spring. A note of interest: a concurrent event at Dunluce Links on the same date is also listed on OGE, so those making the trip from further afield may want to explore options for both courses.<\/p>\n

Beyond the featured competitions above, this week's additions include a full season of open events at Heswall Golf Club<\/a> on the Wirral - a championship course with Dee Estuary views that serves as an official Faldo Elite Tour venue - covering seniors, ladies, mixed, junior and gents pairs formats through the summer. There is also a strong set of new listings at Enniscorthy Golf Club<\/a> in County Wexford, an Eddie Hackett and Pat Ruddy-designed parkland course with a fascinating history and a view of Vinegar Hill from the fairways. In Australia, the Grange Golf Course<\/a> in South Australia has added an Ambrose team day on 17 April, the same club that hosted LIV Golf Adelaide. New listings also came in this week from Norway, Switzerland, Italy, France and Spain, continuing OGE's expansion across European and international competition golf.<\/p>\n
